Chromeo : Night By Night

Back on stage for a co-production between the MEG Montreal Festival and Osheaga, Chromeo returns after two years for an event that promises to be even more beautiful, funkier and sleazier than their last Metropolis gig! Dave 1 (David Macklovitch) and P-Thug (Patrick Gemayel) are the grey matter (or maybe the mojo?) behind the famous Montreal electro-funk duo.

The two friends first met in Montreal at the age of 15 while attending the same school, where they shared a passion for hip-hop. In 2001, Tiga, who worked at the same record store as Dave and who regularly booked Dave’s older brother, A-Trak in the mid 90s, invited him and P-Thug to join his Turbo label. The following year Chromeo began to actively detach themselves from their original hip-hop sound and get a little closer to the style of the label.

After a handful of EPs on Turbo, their debut album She's In ControlFancy Footwork (Vice Records), which, like the first album, was well-received by critics. (Modular Recording) was released in 2004. After a long interlude of three years, the group returned in 2007 with Fancy Footwork took the two Montrealers on a world tour that allowed them to perform at some of the biggest sites on the planet (Reading, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Fujirock, Glastonbury, etc.).

This visibility and an international recognition of their work lead them to sign with K7 to release their own edition of the famous DJ-Kicks compilations. A new album is scheduled for release in 2010, which will include their latest hit, Night by Night, as a single.

Their style is clearly reminiscent of vintage dance music—marked by the pop sound of 80’s music, reverbs, guitar solos—which alternate with autobiographical songs like Momma's Boy. Their electro-romantic kitsch, and addiction to women and synthesizers, which P-Thug lays over with funky breaks and electro beats, while Dave 1 croons through a Talk Box, are reminiscent of Daft Punk’s more housy tracks.
